The Navy beach battalions have gotten little credit, either, 'til very
recently. I realize now that the men we occasionally see in photos and
movies wearing helmets with an arc painted across the front were my
brother's men - US Navy. We usually see them helping wounded, driving
bulldozers, etc.
Thanks, for the link to the Coast Guard stories/histories, Wonko/Don. My
brother was delivered to Omaha beach on LCI(L) 88 operated by Coast Guard,
as were most of them. Brother was second off left/port stairs/ramp into
water to his chin at same time a shell hit the right/starboard ramp

I turned 10 four days after my brother, Lewis, and others of that finest of
generations stormed onto/into France. I was not quite 8 when another
brother, Jerry, helped to deliver Doolittle's men and 16 B-25's on the
carrier, Hornet, to within striking distance of Japan. I was 11 when

My brother, Lewis, then 21 and with 3 1/2 yrs in the Navy, was the senior
NCO/leader of a 48-man platoon of the 6th Naval Beach Battalion that went
