I’ve owned several of the 6 cylinder W108s, and they were great cars. Never had
a V8 version, never wanted one for just the reasons Jaime stated. That, and I
suspect they’re tough to work on with the limited space in the engine
compartment.

108s are expensive to sort out, especially 4.5s. They all need all the
fuel hoses, timing chain, wiring harness repairs - none of these things
impact the 6 cylinder cars. Running 4.5s in nice cosmetic condition are
worth mid to high teens, but often sell for more at auction.
I often recommend 6

David,
Just to clarify, there are steel springs in the (rear) suspension. The
hydropneumatic compensator does just that, it compensates for load on the rear
suspension and is intended to maintain a specific ride height. Often mistakenly
considered nothing more than a big shock absorber, it’s ac
I can't speak to values, other than to echo Dan that generally the crappy
ones aren't worth the effort. And sedans anyway are not worth as much as a
coupé or convertible.
As to the hydropneumatic compensator: a clever but poorly understood
contraption mounted in place of the transverse steel sprin

What would a reasonable amount to pay for one in decent cosmetic shape that
might need some reasonable mechanical work? I would prefer a 4.5, I think. I
have never had a 108 aside from a few parts cars. I know there is some sort of
issue with hydraulic suspension compensator something or other.
It’s likely more dependent on condition than anything else. Nice ones are going
to command big bucks, but maybe buyers are starting to realize what a nightmare
they can be to restore?

I wish I would have bought one years ago when they were much cheaper. According
to some people, they say the demand and prices for them are dropping like a

All 108s, including 4.5s, could be had with leather and MB Tex. I current

My '72 280 SEL 4.5 has the leather option. Interestingly, even the door

W108 almost universally had MB Tex, whereas the W109 300 SEL 3.5/4.5 were
standard leather.

We never wore seat belts in the car driving around town when I was a kid. When
we were very small we did have car seats, but I'm not sure how effective they
were at that time. I think they were more just booster seats.

I liked the way the Kangol seat belts in my '72 220D/8 worked.
I suppose it was some safety-related thing which made them quit,

I know the inline 6 280s could be ordered with either, but the ones I’ve owned
were MBTex as I recall. Never had a V8 W108. That would be scary.

Parts are probably worth the ask. Getting that engine sorted, especially the
fuel system, could be problematic based on the photos and condition. Interior
sure looks nice, and the body/paint issues don’t look bad at all. Looks like
it’s got the old “Kangol” seat belts.

seems quite corroded. Thoughts?
