No. It just that the easiest modems for Linux are "controller
based". Some internals are. Most are not. All external _serial_
modems are controlled based. Not all of the USB extern

20 kbits or so anyway. When the wireless goes down that's
what I use to continue to be able to participate here.

Find a used external modem on eBay or at a computer surplus place. I'd
guess they could be had for next to nothing these days.
