Long time ago I had an answering machine that could be set to start with the
three tones used to signal the phone service had been disconnected. Very
effective at stopping the unwanted calls. Real humans would listen past the
tone, then either leave a message or try again later.

I used to have a little black box that went inline with the POTS line that
would pause the off hook signal or something to that effect. It disrupted
recorded calls somehow by doing this.

If they are recorded messages just ignore them if the caller ID shows no
info or some random number from somewhere. If the answering machine
gets it they stop. If it is a person, like "Technical Services" calling
about your windows computer just start shouting allahuwa akbar, asking
