OK, got this computer that runs xp that has been screwing up now wont boot
because its missing a file. OK, no big deal I think. I will make a boot disk
an copy the file in from dos and see what happens. Wrong. Computer boots up
but will not let me switch to the partition I need to get to the
If the D: partition is NTFS, DOS does not understand that. You need to
boot into something that understands NTFS, perhaps Knoppix? Or boot
off an XP install CD and see if there's some way to repair or get
into a command prompt.

You have to first select that you want to install windows. It then
looks for an existing installation and prompts you to repair it.
I've been warned that the Home Edition of XP does not let you run a
Repair, XP Pro does. I've not tried it with home, so I can't say for
sure.
