Pure oxygen at one atmosphere is indeed a bad thing, especially long term. Lots of blindness in premie babies from giving them pure oxygen back in the 50's before it was known to cause trouble. Pure oxygen can cause oxygen psychosis -- not madness per se as much as distorted thinking.

Too high a concentration of oxygen when diving and you black out. I don't do deep dives with multiple stage bottles of various mixtures but most that do know people that died from breathing the wrong mix at the wrong depth. Nitrogen is what makes you loopy at depth. They call it nitrogen
