Ok here is the deal, if the crank balancer is laying in the car
because the key broke off and that is it, they would have had to
remove it. If it fell off completely on its own, it would hae had
to have broken off the bolt or done something bad to the crank.

I need to get under the hood to see what's what. I'm hoping he didn't
overheat it when the water pump stopped working.

Seller told me where his '79 300SD was sitting (he's currently out of
town) so I drove by it. The harmonic balancer has come loose and is
currenly sitting on the passenger floorboard. It appears that the key
has sheared off. I didn't look at the condition of the driveshaft

Is this the $4000 wonder?
Offer him ten cents a pound, or maybe round it up to the $400 I suggested
earlier, and if you can't fix it you can break even at the salvage yard.
Pull off the trim, bumpers, grille and exterior lamps first if you scrap it.
I now need a steering wheel myself. (oh,

What's difficult about it? Is it a press-on fit or something?

Not when it's already laying on the floor inside the passenger compartment.
But if it fits at all sloppy after running

Yeah, but I'm not sure if there's room for an impact wrench, let alone 6-12 of
torque limiting extension. I hope the crank lines
We welded a bar to the old balancer. Run it around so that it hits
the floor and crank away. Works in either direction with some
jiggling, although better on the 603 and M103 engines.
Volvo has a tool that counterholds the crank, we made one from scrap.

How do you tighten the new balancer by welding a bar to the old balancer?
Do you
On the M103 and OM603 the hub is separate from the balancer -- I
don't think, upon reflection, that this is true of the OM61x
engines. Don't remember what we did on the 75 300D when we found out
we had omitted the space the front seal rides on -- it was missing
from the engine when we got
The difficulty is apparently in lining up the balancer, as discussed in the
