The test refrigerant I use is excellent as a dye carrier, or bubble
generator.
If you're using a halogen sniffer, R134a will work for that. It just
doesn't
carry the simple mineral oil used in R12 systems, so don't operate it.
Some of my tests have been running for years!

Suck it back out and check the o rings. Fresh oil and some dye would be able
to provide a second opinion for the sniffer. OR, put the dye in and see where
the leaks are. If there are some, pull the stuff back out.

I guess so but this compressor is fine, makes no noises etc. might be leaking
though.

Secret message to Kaleb - I have a stash of virgin R12 that I'll sell you -

You should buy some of those screens that you put in the inlet of the
compressor. I’ve done it on all the ones I’ve replaced compressors on so if
they crater it won’t bugger up the compressor.

Well I recovered it. I charged 2.25 lbs and recovered 1.78, so lost a bit in
the test. The machine itself could also be leaking or the holding tank valves.
Anyway, I think this is what I’m going to do. I did another sniffer test and
before the connections around the drier set it off. Heck even g
I would.
When I’ve had a questionable system I pull a vacuum for maybe 30-45 minutes
then wait a day to see if it’s still got a vacuum. That’s mainly because I
don’t have a recovery system, and I don’t want to lose the charge.

Maybe I should recover it then pull a vacuum and leave it till tomorrow then
see where it’s at?

Charge it and run that as your test, but find a way to avoid permanent
installation of the adapters.

Yes I got plenty of 134, so you are saying charge it with that as a test but
don’t run the system on it? I would have to install some r134 adaptors anyway I
guess.
What size is the high side fitting? I have gotten adapters before that were too
small to screw onto the MB r12 fitting.

Not barrier hoses, so they’re probably all leaking out anyway.

Recover the R12, replace all the O-rings, full with nitrogen and a little R134
and check for leaks.
Don't you have like 300 pounds of R134? Sacrifice that stuff.

So I’m getting this 85 190d 5 speed back on the road that I got from copart for
$400. It had been sitting for no telling how many years but is pretty clean.
Replaced the starter and she runs great. Ac is original r12 and was completely
empty. I’m not sure if that is not be unexpected in a car si
