hard, and brittle and shrinking, hence the leak.

RTV is not all that good at holding up to oil, etc. As I've said,
I've used JB Weld successfully for this kind of thing. Obviously
rotted and failing rubber

Perhaps, but I wouldn't leave it on. You only want to pull it
in a bit, not suck in a big blob to live on the inside.
