hello all!
thanks for all the responses on this issue.
was finally able to get under the car while it was in the air; by
turning the wheels by i hand was able to fairly consistently produce Bad
Noises from the vicinity of one of the Axle Shafts.
they're on their way to the Retirement

does it look like maybe somebody replaced the boots at some point? I
have seen boot replacements that dont turn out very good.

nope; no torn boots; one of them has the slightest hints of some
cracking on the largest portion, but that's it.

I.E. my coupe. The axles were rebuilt by the MB dealer less than
10kmi before I bought the car, they didn't last 10kmi of my driving.

hi!
i don't have any indication that they're anything other than
original; they look to be identical on both sides, and give the
appearance that they may have been there the life of the car,... (i
bought it 5 years ago with ~121K miles on it in SoCal, and put the last
50K miles on it. it
thanks all for the suggestions on the driveline issues; based on my
undercar inspections (nothing visibly out of sorts), observations
(intermittent nature of noise, tone of noise, lack of vibrations, and
frequency related more to wheel-speed than driveline speed) and other
hints/tips from the
are the boots torn? Thats a sure sign.

hi gang!
time for an invitation to play one of our least favorite games;
diagnosis of an intermittent noise via the internet. ;-*
the suspect: Helga; an '85 300D California car, with just over 170K
miles on it that i've had for the last 50K+ miles.
scenario: trunk moderately
Please check both flex disks immediately! I had a rear one let go,
same noise, but severe vibration because a big chunk fell out.
ANY distortion, cracks, or signs of the inner cord being visible
means the flex disk is bad and failing. The rear one won't give you
too much trouble (mostly

I had noise similar to what you describe - no clank, but the bumpy noise.
I had new tires put on two weeks ago. On driving away - no noise.
Tires looked fine, but new tires fixed what I thought was some
driveline mishap, perhaps half shaft, perhaps diff. Solution: new
tires - easy
I vote for bad axle CV joint. That noise and behavior can be
intermittent, at least it was on my TD, seemed to get worse longer I
drove it, I guess it was getting hot or something. Do you notice the
noise or whatever in reverse too? Did you jack up the rear and rotate
wheels by hand while

Once one has experienced a few of each type of problem, one can
usually determine whether it's driveline or wheel because of the
base frequency of the noise: driveline is at about 3x the frequency
of wheel noises. That helps narrow it down significantly. I
had a rear wheel bearing go out once
