Epson has, for some years, incorporated small PCBs in their cartridges that
record ink levels. If you attempt to refill a cartridge, it still won't print
because the PCB tells the printer that the cartridge is empty, even when it's
not.
It's not a big deal, as you can buy the devices

Epson printers have circuitry to obstruct refilling cartridges.? I have been
refilling my cannon printer cartridges for years, with no more trouble than
putting on a pair of rubber gloves.
