Yup. The commercial equivalent is called a rotary converter.
You can run a three phase motor on single phase power, but it operates the
motor at about 60%, and you risk damaging the motor depending on how it is
wound and starts.

three-phase motor. Not sure exactly how this works, I think it runs on one
