On the '85 300SD, is there a strut or some other device that holds the trunk
lid open? Ever since adding the warning triangle (heavy), it has not stayed
open well, but I noticed it being particularly bad this morning (cold)...which
made me think there was a strut (cold air, less volume, won't wo
I don't think that my '83 'SD has one, just a spring loaded setup that holds
the lid up. It doesn't seem too stiff though. I don't have the triangle
either.

The trunk is aluminum, so they prolly figured a beefy spring was not necessary,
but the wind catches it and WATCH YOUR HEAD! With the triangle, it's much
worse. I'll have to look more closely because the springs seem to help pull it
shut...so what keeps it open?

Well typically, on US cars without the triangle if you pop the trunk
when it gets fully open it will bounce a couple of times. That is
because the triangle is missing. With it installed, the precise german
engineering has it to where the trunk will just open and not bounce.

Just springs. That is preferable to struts, because they pretty
much never fail. Some trunk and hood springs have a series of

The rear window struts on the '91 and '95 Isuzu Rodeos in the family have
all failed, but the trunk on the old 300SD still stays open. Both of them

I have had the part that holds the spring to the boot (trunk) come away
in my 123, just broke the spot welds and bent it a bit. However it was a
cheap and easy fix.
