For older cars that have not been registered in several years many states
purge the records after so many years. In other words, when you go in and
fill out the statement of ownership and a lost title form and they look in
the records the only documentation they have is what you have provided
PS: Good luck in Michigan. They have the worst dmv I have ever dealt
with. There is litterally NO way to recover lost paperwork if there is no
info in their system.

California is worse.
When I bought my 1962 300SE it was part of an estate and had not been on the
road for 3-4 years. In order for me to gain title to the car they expected me
to pay all of the registration fees for the missing years before I could take
title of the car.

Do you happen to remember what that lost title place was called?

No, but if you look on sites like Hemmings you'll find all kinds of ads for
them. Lots of people with built up hot rods or vintage cars that are barn finds
use the services.

Bill Wachsmuth was willing to help me but the timing was bad. He said that if
you went to one of the non-State places that could do title work, like AAA, and
you were a customer, that they could often get a lot of the old stuff tossed
out and allow you to get a registration for much less. I
Have the seller apply for a duplicate title before completing the
purchase. Much easier for the current owner to get a duplicate title
issued than go through all the pain of trying to buy a car without a
title. Indiana has a similar convoluted process...

From what I can tell, in Illinois...
About 12 years ago I did something like this here in IL.
I don't remember if I had title or not, but, I recall having to ask
for one of the local State Police guys to stop by and verify the VIN
on a form and mailed that in to receive title -
I have no experience in IL, but every state has a process for this. NJ has
a similar one that takes a long time and is very cumbersome. But its
possible. If you go for it, follow all the rules exactly.
Kaleb... don't you have a lot of contacts at local dealers? Dealerships

Oh I can do it or get it done but it's still a pain.

I wonder if the (nice, obliging) brother can just title transfer directly

it's possible to obtain a title and register a vehicle...
I got the Frankenheap titled and registered to me, via WA's
abandoned vehicle mechanism. It took some time, but only
cost me the price of a registered letter to the PO of record,
(returned unopened), and the mandatory State inspection
I thought about that but let's just say I picked the car up in a trailer park,
not really the kind of people I want to fool with. This car seems to run just
fine and interior is nice but it's got the Illinois surface rust on every panel
and will either sell it as a cheap runner or part it out.
Right, it's these awkward random scenarios that put cars in la la land...
