I agree, skiing in general can be dangerous for folks young enough
to think they cannot be hurt. I wrapped my self around a large pine
at the age of 20 in Vail, CO. Estimated speed was 50 mph. I got a
free ride down the mountain and spent 10 days in hospital and feel

I agree, it makes no sense whatsoever to have those things right there
when the possibility of leaving the track at any speed is clearly a
possibility. I was thinking that mesh fencing, but those posts are so
close you would need a hard barrier as you mention; although, skidding

I used to work with a guy who used to be on the Austrian (downhill)
national ski team. He did a Sonny Bono. He told me one time that
all his face was plastic from hitting the tree. He was lucky!

the course, kinda like on the downhill ski runs, that would catch you
and slow you down before you hit stationary objects.
