I have something that's exactly the same that I use as a doorstop
and it is definitly a slag from some steel works.

Mark / Anyone interested:
I don't believe this to be a sample of the Estherville mesosiderite.
The metal distribution is wrong, the vugs are large and round while specimens
of Estherville display small (1 to 4mm) angular cavities and a bi-modal
distribution of metal.
Additionally please note the
My heartfelt prayers go out to the friends and families of the astronauts
killed today.
This bit of speculation is thanks to my husband: upon launch, a piece of
insulation flew off and struck the Space Shuttle. It seemingly did no
damage at the time, but may have opened a hairline crack in the

At today's press conference, the Shuttle Program manager confirmed
that Columbia was over California at 8:53 AM EST when the sensors
in the left wing stopped working, which correlates to the time
the Caltech astronomer was observing the shuttle from the ground.
The Shuttle people have talked to the

In Kalpana Chawla's last words to the media, she described one of her "big
WOWs" of being an astronaut. She told about sitting next to a window of the
space shuttle while looking down at our wonderful blue planet and it's swirling
firmament of clouds. Refocusing, she then saw her own reflectio

Bob's has only a couple of very small vugs. The photo in the auction is full
of large ones.
It is almost certainly a slag of some sort.
But we will likely never know.
