Some new findings. Hopefully these means something to someone because I
don't really know where to go from here.
I noticed that I can't reproduce the 'device timeout' if I turn off the
device at the AP. Could the AP be responding with something fishy?

So I guess that the LED is always on is ok.
I've done tcpdump(8) on the AP and I get no output from that while the
client gets time out on the ral0 device, so I don't think the interface
is
