I'm trying re-learn how to bring a new install up to -stable, and I've

and not doing a very good job of it. The recommended partition left me
with only 1.4G for /usr, and it was 90

There is no need to check out the source trees as root.
Just chmod -R the whole things to a regular user account
(for example your own) and us
