Around 1996, I ported./worked on an AIPS( Astronomical Image
Processing Sysetm) software to Linux.
See http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/aips parhaps they have some Perl API
by now..

book "Astronomical Algorithms" from the library, but the formulas in it
are not trivial and
