Thanks for the suggestion about using humor. My 8th graders haven't developed a sense of humor. Their "humor" relies on mostly odd things. There is no understanding of wordplay, inference, etc. If it isn't along the lines of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE or something hurtful, it isn't "funny". A few loved

Absolutely they don't want out. Not at their age. If you suggest to a child that education is a way out, you will usually sound as if you are suggesting that the child reject his/her parents. Children need to feel attached to their parents even when their parents are not healthy for them. I do
