I have used and advocate a similar vocab tracker; I call mine a
Language Log. It's a bookmark for students to mark words they come
across that they don't know. Using CSSR (Context, Structure, Sound, and
Reference), they mark next to the word either a letter showing which
technique helped them
I just took a DRA II training yesterday afternoon. The kits are broken up
in K-3 which goes up to level 40 and the other kit 4-8.
I'm not sure if the new DRA2 has levels 40-60, but the old one did. 40 is
fourth grade, 50-fifth grade, etc.

Did you use a grant to get these items or were they funded by your district?

Hi Amy,
I don't know if you got my post, it said the book was To Understand by Ellin
Keene. I am a little further along now, and there is a lot to think about.
Just when I think I am doing a great job, I read about teachers doing so much
more. WOW - I have just learned so much from all these

I just finished the book and LOVED it! Now I'm ready to go back through and
really work on all the charts, then I'll read the book again and I'll
UNDERSTAND it! It's an adventure.

I have been reading Words Their Way for a class that I am taking and
was pretty impressed with the activities offered. I was interested to
know how some of you may be using word sorts within your classroom and
how your students seem to be progressing using this activity?
Thanks!
Brie
I use it with 4 different groups in my 5th grade class and have used it with
1st and 2nd graders for years prior to this. I love the program and see great
success.

Hey everyone!
I was doing some price comparisons between websites tonight and I wanted to
pass along a good deal that I found on the Barnes Noble website.
I just ordered To Understand and Notebook Know-How for less than $30. (Amazon
is selling To Understand alone for $25.) I paid $17.50 for
Would you be able to share the 15 percent code or how you found it?
Thanks,
Lisa

Lisa,
I actually didn't even write the code down. I just copied it directly from a
website. I NEVER EVER buy anything online without googling the company.
Most of the time I'm able to find a coupon code in a matter of seconds.
What I did was: google barnes and noble coupon code

I guess we should start checking for coupon codes before ordering online.

are doing really well with it. I have 4 sorts going right now (down from 5 or 6

some extra time to get more of the games made, but I like it

Hi Brie,
The thing I don't like about this is that the CD will not work with Vista,
which is on my new laptop, so I can't do any planning at home. I really like
the DVD. I also wish the games were more explicitly explained. I'm the kind of
person who really needs to experience them in
