I'm not trying to put a damper on the enthusiasm, but want everyone to be aware
of the issues. My thinking is similar to Dave's, and if you go to the link he
provided, you can decide for yourself. I've been doing textmapping for 4 or 5
years now, and haven't had anyone deny my request.

Check out The Daily 5 book (Stenhouse). There are adjustments that need to
be made to the management system (which is just a vehicle for having
children practice new skills and strategies--it's not a reading program) for
Kindergarten. Search Yahoo groups for the KindergartenDaily 5 group.

Getting permission is the safest route. Another approach is to buy two
copies of the book, cut the spines off, and then make your scroll from that.
That's what I do most of the time. It's faster and easier, and the quality

Hi Heather,
The draft is just a portion. That explains the abrupt "end".
Little Bear and Frog and Toad: I'd scroll both books, chapter by chapter. In
other words, instead of making a single long scroll of Little Bear, I'd make
four scrolls -- one for each story. Same idea for Frog and Toad.
Included in lessons could be how to engage kids in the thinking about the text.
If you've seen Comprehension Connections, by Tanny McGregor, they share
specific activities that are engaging and interactive, where kids are "doing"
while they're thinking.

Kare,
That is a great point about the recess. I do not feel that schools force
children to read. I will definitely try to use more songs and other
activities that you mentioned. Thank you very much!

Check out Wisconsin Public Television's program INTO THE BOOK. The program has
a student part and a teacher part. My middle school teachers and I have viewed
the teacher part even though the classes and students in the program are

What do you mean when you say "stuff that goes with the lessons"?
I mean - not too many graphic organizers, three column note forms, note
taking guides, etc. I realize they are important but it can get to a
point where they take over and the real teaching and learning gets lost.

ELA is fun. But the fun is in finding the right titles. Kids pick up on your

Our kids don't have to "find a book" cuz they have a bag of books at their
desks and, no, noone has to make them get them out--they can hardly wait for
