I'm a fifth grade teacher that wants to do author studies this year.
Does anyone have any ideas they can share on how you do them? In the
past I felt they took up a lot of my direct instruction time. I'd like
to hear how you fit them in with teaching the comprehension stratgies,

My name is Tiffanie Laforet and I am a student at Wayne State University. I am
about to start my full time student teaching in September in a kindergarten

cooperating teacher does as well. What would be the most
Tony Stead's book Good Choice is excellent for setting up independent reading
in Kindergarten. His ideas could be used for all grades. He is very explicit on
activities. The book is an excellent resource.

Hello, I am currently an elementary education student and I will be doing my
student teaching in the fall in a 4th grade class. I was wondering if anyone
had any suggestions or literature on how to motivate students to read for
comprehension and not to just finish a book. Thank you for your
In the past I have had my 4th grade students conduct an author study on an
author of their choice. It is mostly an independent project done as
homework. We start in January and the project concludes in June. The students

Jerry Spinelli and Patricia Reilly Giff are two that I have used. We used them
when we were studying theme and main idea. I would mix groups every few days
and have them compare the themes they were finding in their books and support
their findings with evidence from their text. The groups
When I taught Kindergarten, we had 5th grade reading buddies. We did
this in the K classroom and had the K student choose the book. Their
teacher and I set some guidelines:
- both buddies must be holding the book between them (we had them sit
on the floor)
- the 5th student was to read to

We read Natalie Babbitt and combine it with the comprehension strategy of
synthesizing. We do this near the end of the year, after we have focused on the
other strategies. We notice how our understanding of Babbitt as a writer
changes as we read a second book. We analyze her writing style and

Have the janitor move the desk out of your room and just take a look around.
That should help you decide!! They have wonderful drawer units available
now that you can use for the things that are yours that take very little
space.

You monitor students through conferences with them. It is extremely
effective since you get one on one teaching time with them. How much experience
did you have with SSR in your elementary career? SSR is often considered one
of the best ways to get kids to love reading. You give
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if you had a teacher's desk in your room or instead
used the small group table or another table as your desk. I like
having something that is mine and off limits to the kids, but I also
know that it's kind of a waste of space b/c most of the stuff that is

While a certain leap of faith needs to be made (how do I know you are really

through conferences. Honest conversations, formal and informal, combined with

And is it really fair to force students to sit and read quietly if they
sincerely struggle with it or genuinely don't like it?
Amber,
You can approach SSR non-traditionally. Once you get to know your children and
their reading styles, you can pair those who struggle with a stronger student

It would be inspirational to you, I think, Amber, to read The Reading Zone
by Nancie Atwell. It's not a long book and it might open up a world of
opportunities to you.
