I have used dialogue journals/letters with kids in the past and I agree with
you Sally. Kids love them.
First, I found that the children who loved to read/loved to write, enjoyed
writing the letter to me and thought it was fun. However, the letters
sometimes got away from me, especially

Book mishaps do happen, but I feel it is better to have a mishap than a
non-reader. I had a student one year who didn't choose to read. In second
grade his teacher didn't feel he was responsible with books so he was forced to
read only books in a certain basket that were about good
Another source for leveling books is Scholastics Teacher Book Wizard Site.
You can choose to level by DRA, guided reading level, Lexile framework or

It is also a source if you need to do the opposite and find books at a
Until I began teaching only Art, I always had a teacher desk, and feel
no need to apologize for that. When I was teaching with a partner in
the multiage classroom, we had our desks facing and butted up against
each other, and would debrief at the end of the day. I have never
worked in a
I am interested in finding out what you are using to create a database for
book cataloging. All my books are leveled but not cataloged which can be
frustrating when I am looking for a read-aloud book to match instruction. I
would like to create a system to find the books I want to use instead of
The way I'm attacking it now is looking up each book on AR for their levels,
adding it to my database and making labels.
Carmen, would you share information regarding your labels? Thanks.

For many years, I did without a teacher's desk and all of my things took up
every available space in the room! So, this year, I am back to a teacher's
desk, in the corner, and shelf space for my teaching things. I am going to try
very hard to stay contained in that area. We'll see!

I read the Book Whisperer and decided I needed to put my books by genre. I also
teach 5th grade and think kids should be able to figure out if books are a good
fit without us having to do it for them. In the real library world books aren't
leveled. We also have AR but I'm not pushing it. If
You might want to try www.librarything.com It's free up to a certain # of

If you have a mac, delicious library is great. You just use the
camera on your computer and it scans from the barcode all of the
information. It pulls up all the info from amazon. You can then add
your own notes.

I, too, have struggled with the to level or not to level issue.
After reading the thoughts of the two sisters (of Daily 5 and CAFE

Good for you!!? I've seen so many horror scenes of teachers and librarians

I had 3 high school students use my Excell program to create a spreadsheet and
type in titles of books, level, bin they were in (all were lettered A-Z),
genre, and what teaching strategy the book could be used for.
Leslie, It's fun to hear from someone who liked it as much as I did. And

Whoops, I see a forgot a question. No I did not have a required format. I
