I really like the Alex Rider series starting with Stormbreaker. other books I
have had good luck with are Harris and Me, Otis Spofford, and The Pinballs. If
they like Fantasy I read the first book in the Ranger's Apprentice series this

For any word that's appropriate (and most are), why not have students
draw a picture that shows the meaning of the word? I've done this and
in addition to tapping into the strengths of students who are visual
learners, it gives students a little time to think creatively.

I've always like having the students create a sentence using the word. That
allows you to know if they truly understand the meaning of the word. Also gives
you an idea about mechanics as well, which you can grade separately.
