I worked with some struggling 3rd graders last year coaching in a classroom
with a Guided Reading group we used the Jake Drake series by Andrew
Celements and the students really liked the books and the main character

I think there it's less need for MINI-lessons at this age. I actually like
the traditional format of WW of lesson, engagement, sharing. Of course,
Nancie Atwell remains the best of the best, and her DVD and lessons are
truly amazing, but I always really like the lessons that Ralph Fletcher
