I would say instead of looking for decodables use high-quality predictable text. Try R.C. Owen books. But even before that, I would make a journal out of plain, unlined white paper (about 15 sheets) tucked and stapled into a construction paper cover. Title it, "__'s Journal" then have him

I agree with this. In fact it was the way I have always taught. I always did partner reading if the children wanted to. One year an excellent reader wanted to partner with his best friend who was having trouble decoding. They chose a book that was very difficult to decode and comprehend, yet
