This is in response to the Hatchet discussion:
You should contact your local Boy Scout Troop. In our county, all fifth
graders at all schools read Hatchet and then the Boy Scout Camp offers a

Hello everyone. When I was student teaching I had the opportunity to teach
and work with a group of fifth graders in a special education class during
the novel study of *Hatchet*. I had the students pretend to be Brian and
keep a journal of his various experiences. This was a "fun" way for the

One of our summer school teachers read Hatchet with his children last year, and
they loved it! I talked to one of the students lately, and she's now reading
Brian's Winter on her own. There's also a video that is very true to the book
Hatchet to show, but don't get the cartoon version video --
There are excellent resources on the Internet for this book. Reluctant
readers are usually hooked after the plan emergency also, this
book is on tape ..very well done. I usually have kids listen (follow)
along to the first 3 chaptersI haven't found any student yet
