Testing/assessment is embedded into this book, but I think it would be worth
its weight in gold to you. Check out The Word-Conscious Classroom by Judith
A. Scott, Bonnie J. Skobel, and Jan Wells. Should be required reading for
us all, I think.

For any word that's appropriate (and most are), why not have students
draw a picture that shows the meaning of the word? I've done this and
in addition to tapping into the strengths of students who are visual
learners, it gives students a little time to think creatively.

Anyone have any advice on the best way to give teacher made vocabulary
tests. I want it to be more than just matching definitions and was
wondering
what other teachers use as a vocabulary assessment.

I've always like having the students create a sentence using the word. That
allows you to know if they truly understand the meaning of the word. Also gives
you an idea about mechanics as well, which you can grade separately.
