Sandi that is awesome to hear. I have only taught in Title One School and this
was my first year out of the classroom as a Reading Specialist. I taught mostly
in 1st grade and if you do not let yourself feel these smaller triumphs that
lead to so much more, it is hard to make it through the year

assimilate new knowledge into what we already know and change our thinking to
accommodate new knowledge.

It reminds me of accommodation: you have your background knowledge and
learn something new then change your perception to use what you know know or
have learned. So, yes that is synthesis because you have a new
understanding.

My book, Beyond Retelling, is one technique for teaching synthesis. It is
not a skill or strategy. It is simply a way of turning Bloom's upside down
and getting kids to read two books, think of the theme of the two books and
synthesis the theme. It is specific teaching technique, called Thinking
