Hi all:
I've been reading all of the threads but most people seem to be at the
elementary level. Anyone know of a textbook for HS specifically 9th
grade? I ahve students that are in 9th grade but are reading 2-6 grades
below their level. We have the Reader's Handbook, but the texts are too
Holt's Elements of Literature is actually really good (compared to other basal
readers I've seen).
That said, I would focus on chapter books instead.

Take a look the Edge, published by Hampton Brown. Michael Smith is among
the authors. This is good stuff--written to h.s. Standards and available at
three reading levels. The books are feel 'high school', the units are
inquiry based and the activities meaningful. We used the lowest level with

We adopted Rigby Literacy by Design last year and we're happy with it.
It is not a basal - although the 3rd-5th graders have a sourcebook
which is pretty darned close to a basal - but it is used for shared and
interactive reading. Our teachers like it and we embrace the balanced
literacy

working hard to help our teachers teach reading using Balanced Literacy. Have
any of you adopted materials that you feel really support the use of Balanced
