Take a look the Edge, published by Hampton Brown. Michael Smith is among the authors. This is good stuff--written to h.s. Standards and available at three reading levels. The books are feel 'high school', the units are inquiry based and the activities meaningful. We used the lowest level with

We adopted Rigby Literacy by Design last year and we're happy with it. It is not a basal - although the 3rd-5th graders have a sourcebook which is pretty darned close to a basal - but it is used for shared and interactive reading. Our teachers like it and we embrace the balanced literacy
