I drive Hwy 100 every day and have often noticed this dark hawk that Steve
mentioned, so today I finally went out to try and get some photos. I had
to briefly pull over on the on ramp to 100 SB so could only get off a few
shots, but hopefully these are good enough to identify if it's a Harlan's
I finally forced myself out into the cold after a few week break yesterday and

I apologize for inadequacies regarding my previous post. The longspurs were
seen at the MSP international airport. They were at the north end of the
airport where 28th ave S ends in a T foraging along the roadside to the
west of the T. They were seen early in the morning of the 1st.

Hi Liz,
these are excellent photos of a spectacular hawk. The warm brown
coloration, rufous dorsal color of the tail, and rufous upper chest rule out
a Harlan Hawk. Note the long wings, which are typical of a western
red-tail, and not of our eastern sub-species. The tail coloration is
