so he did see them in the wild. His paintings were far more realistic
than any available at the time, and I'm pretty sure his eye compares
way more favorably to my "modern eye," although I'm sure Mr. Nelson's

The birds on theG oogle logo are John James Audubon paintings and yes
they do look strange to our modern eye.

Sunday: We had a visitor at the house: an immature Broad-winged Hawk sat on
top of one of the wood duck houses posing for my wife's camara. I also went
down to 180th Street marsh where the habitat is quite inviting. I found Roger

I've never birded Stearns County much, but decided since I'm living here for a
while, I should. Wow - it's a big county! I had a great time, and discovered
several WMA's and WPA's that I'll definitely visit again in the coming weeks.
The most interesting birds were at my first stop - the Alban
Last evening around 7:00pm, I counted 32 or 33 AMERICAN AVOCETS at Bass
Ponds in Bloomington (sorry about the late post, no internet at home).
They were standing at the end of the long peninsula in the middle of
the pond at the far southwest part of the park, the one that borders
highway 77.
