Late this afternoon while raking I had two flocks of Tundra Swans flying
high, obscured by the clouds.

We have heard them calling here in Anoka county in Oak Grove, in two different
years. I have also heard them in Maplewood State Park up north, near Detroit
Lakes area.

While deer hunting this morning in NW Todd County, we counted 20 migratory
flocks of Sandhills and 17 flocks of tundra swans in just over 2 hrs. I have
occasionally seen swans move en mass like this, but not cranes, until today.

Late this afternoon a flock of 50-60 Tundra Swans flew over Crosby Park,
headed SE. The usual winter-resident woodpeckers were all in evidence,
including a small-looking (relatively!) Pileated who was working a tree
above the west end of the paved trail along the river. A walk through the

The last two days I been guiding a client from Maryland but the weather has
been dreadful. On Saturday we headed up to Sax-Zim Bog at dawn to look for
owls and other specialties of the bog but the winds and rain were terrible for
viewing birds. I did manage to locate a Hoary Redpoll feeding al

Several years ago, my husband and I camped at Rush River in the MN River

We have heard them in recent years along the St. Croix River just north of
the MN TH 48 bridge (west of Danbury WI), although not this year. Seven or
eight years ago we were surprised to hear one calling briefly at our cabin
in Ogema Township, Pine County. Our neighbors to the north report that

On Facebook, National Audubon Society posted a nice picture. Pretty
dramatic looking. They say they are related to night hawks, and I
learned to recognize night hawks very early in life. I assume they are
both birds that fly around scooping bugs out of the air.

I'm assuming the Cornell map is based on reports from birders. If they
show the whole state as a range, isn't that suggesting somewhere in the
metro area people are seeing them?

Cornell's map for wpw shows all of MN as its range. I've never heard it
nor heard of it over the years. Where are people seeing it?

I've had three small flocks of vocal Tundra Swans fly over my house in Goodhue
Cty this week, heading east.
I also saw large flocks of Tundras fly over Lake Byllesby and surrounding
fields today, heading southeast. It was very cold and windy, compared to
yesterday. The mud flats are extensiv
A very quick trip to Pope County. A day and a half in the snow, fog, and wind.
Tundra Swans: Pretty good sized flock, maybe 200, on Larson Lake west of my

Common Redpolls: Flock of 25 – 30 birds along the back roads south
Just saw two V-flocks (about 30-50 each) of Tundra Swans flying NW, relatively
low, softly calling "hoo!". Seen over Cliff Rd north of Lebanon Hills Park in

This morning I observed a Surf Scoter on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis, Hennepin
County. The raw winds and the rain/sleet/snow mix as the temperatures dropped
would make it difficult to clearly see the SUSC without a scope as it stayed in
the middle of the lake.

Despite rain/sleet/snow and strong wings on Saturday, the Cassin's

They were re-found Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. The kingbird was located

Just over a month to go until the Christmas Bird Count and you are probably
wondering whether any of the recently reported rare birds in the state have
ever been seen on the CBC.
