Hi, I am looking to go out birding with a few friends on Jan 3, most do not
even own binoculars. I am a novice, myself, but I do know a few birds. We
are going to stop at someone's home at Cty Rd Hwy 15 & Hwy 4 to begin with
to see the birds at the feeders.
We will be touring in the cars.

Around noon today found a Great Gray Owl north of County Road 18 on 320th Place
just south of the snowmobile crossing. The bird flew up from the ditch onto a
telephone pole. Also, saw a Black-billed Magpie fly across Cty.18 near 282nd

Today Butch Ukura and I birded around Aitkin County. We drove up to
Aitkin County Road 18 and found 3 GREAT GRAY OWLS. The first 2 were
sitting on telephone poles ( on 2 of 3 consecutive poles). The first 2
owls were three and two-tenths miles east of highway 169 and the third

My boyfriend and I explored Westwood Hills Nature Center in St. Louis Park
this afternoon. We heard what we believe to be Red Crossbills. A bird or
two flew over the pine forest at 1:00pm, and then one returned around

Varied Thrush was spotted again today about 5 or 6 houses west of 47th and
Oakley. I believe it to be same individual spotted by Janet Riegle & Laura
Erickson on 12/15 and Don Kienholz on 12/19. I spotted it at 2:00 PM today,
12/28.

The location of this owl is known but I guess in the interest of not stressing
out the little guy it is being withheld.
Sorry to those who asked for directions.

Quick trip to Pope County after Christmas. The bird activity was pretty
subdued; too much Christmas celebration, perhaps.
The Common Redpolls were out in force – one larger flock on Thursday between
Lowry and Starbuck contained 75+ birds attacking seed pods along the road. Two

After being away visiting family for the holidays, I returned to find that
the female Varied Thrush is still a regular visitor to our yard near Grand
Rapids. It arrived on 11/29, so tomorrow will mark at least 1 month that
it has been here.
I'm not sure exactly which feed it's eating, but I've be
