We have twice witnessed bald eagles picking off muskrats off of our pond...a
pretty cool sight.

South pond at Hamden Slough (across road from old HQ) has been drawn down to
aid shorebird migration. Birds seen yesterday: Greater Yellowlegs. Least
Sandpipers, and Solitary Sandpiper.

It may have been the snowy owl, not so surprising given that this was at
the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport in a season when there were many reports
from along the runways of snowy owls. My plane was at the top of a runway
waiting for the signal to go, and there sat the dingy snowy owl on a cell

period of about a week where there were 2 Mississippi Kites (one juvenile and
one adult) and 1 Swallow-tailed Kite hanging out at an Apple Orchard. It was

The first two weeks of March of this year I was in Panama and while
looking for Eagles in the Darien we found a Slender-billed Kite. This
was only the second recorded siting of this bird in Panama. Here is a

Once on a trip to NW Mexico, we saw a bird on telephone lines near a home right
on the road at the lower end of a smallish tree-covered mountain. (There were
lots of jays and thrush and other birds around.)
It was a small bird, near the home, and no one paid much attention to it.

I was blessed to have a family reunion at Whitewater State Park this week and
had a couple of birds worth noting.
