On a scouting trek to the Lake Byllesby area, in advance of next weekend's
Hastings Area Birding Festival, Rob and I made an impromptu stop at Jirik
Sod Farms. As suspected, last night's rains had flooded the sod fields,
making great shorebird habitat.
We found two American Avocets, resting at
A fun afternoon at Prairie Marsh Farm, going from overcast to rain and then
sunshine brought out numerous first of the year birds for the farm. Harris's

The pair of Avocets are still present in the SW pond. Also present are 3
Boneparte's Gulls and Blue and Green-winged Teal. On Eastern pond are 14
Greater Yellowlegs and 4 Lesser Yellowlegs.

This morning on County Road 14 east of County Road 7 13 Franklin's Gulls most
in breeding plumage.

The teal apparently flew west from the original pond about an hour ago and
hasn't been relocated. There are a few more neighborhood ponds directly
west of the original spot that were checked without success.

One jumpy Snowy Egret currently at the south edge of the North Ottawa
Impoundment, about a quarter-mile east of the Traverse County line.
Plenty of ducks and shorebirds present including six Long-billed Dowitchers
along the west border and American Golden Plovers scattered in the
