I photographed a Snowy Owl in Waseca County this morning. It was west of New
Richland on Highway 30 at the turn to Matawan. It was all over that
intersection--on a utility pole, on the road, in a fence line, and in a field.
It was being hectored by crows.

Turkey Vulture feeding on dead deer just outside Albert Lea.
I saw it right before the snow fell. At this time of basketball tournaments,
some might call that a buzzard beater or a blizzard beater. Not me.

On my way to work this morning, I was pleased to see nine Gray Partridges at
the intersection of 325th St. and 715th Ave. in Hartland Township. The warm
weather (20 degrees, and that's above zero) must have engaged their need to
frolic.

Every year, right around Christmas, a male cowbird makes an appearance at my
window-mounted feeder. He chows down with great gusto. I suspect it’s not the
same cowbird, but what do I know? I do know that cowbirds are not the favorite
bird of most folks, but I’m always happy to see the Christmas

Correction on my previous posting. The Varied Thrush is in Blue Earth County. I
am sure it would be just as happy in Nicollet County, but it is not there.

The snow brought in Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls to the feeders. It was
good to see the redpolls as they had been uncommon redpolls here this winter.
