My platform feeder has some pretty good stuff for cold weather. But I
started wondering about adding fruit. Any particularly good fruits to
add for the birds that like it? I have peanuts, sunflower seeds, small

Our local parakeet-on-the-loose still around. Showed up at the platform
feeder by the window. My wife keeps a cage of parakeets (3 or 4). So we
put some of the parakeet food out there.

Got two loners in succession at the kitchen windown feeder. First, a

Reading all the reports of birds north of the Twin Cities made me wonder
about activity south. Which brought the tundra swans to mind. Many
years ago,I drove to Alma to see what I could. There were swans there,
but not thousands. My timing wasn't precise. Anyone go when the big

Haven't seen the bird for a day or two. Owner might have chased it
down. Or it might have died from exposure. No way to know for sure.

For the nearly two decades I've lived in my present house, we've always had
mourning dove pairs. I don't know if we've had them through every season. But
according the map I just saw, practically all of Minnesota is in the mourning
dove range. I'm wondering if our weird year of weather has had
Finally sounded right. Went out at 5am to get newspapers, heard the solitary

Woke up at 6am. Was reading a blog when, down the street, very clearly, I
heard a robin do its morning song. And it reverberates. Perhaps because of
the rain, there is very little other bird calling.

I live in S. Minneapolis. Early this morning, the cardinals were singing
nearby. I looked at my watch, and then it occurred to me: During the warmer
months, I always know what time it is because robins are at it. So, now I'm
wondering if it is too early for robins to be here. At least here i
We have what I think is a solo rbw that hops around from yard to yard.
Interesting part to me is how it lands woodpecker-style on my platform feeder,
arches its neck over the side, pecks once, and disappears. I wonder what it
was hoping for.

Lived in my south Minneapolis home since October 1993, and I think this is the
first time I've seen a red-bellied woodpecker in the tree. Must be the strange
weather.
