I saw a female Black-backed Woodpecker in the western-most edge of
Gooseberry Park. It was in the middle of a birch wood, pounding away.

And thanks to all for the information on the gull. Saw it just after

On Friday, I had 5-6 singing atop Oberg Mountain in Cook County. Of
interest one had the unusual song. These numbers would be expected
at this time of year. More Black-throated Blue Warblers singing that

Just before it poured I walked the back of Tettegouche Park. Five
singing at and north and south of the trail junction, about 1/2-1
mile in as you enter from the back of the park. Good numbers for
this early in the season. Did not try for the Painted Bunting or any

Jim Lind and I walked in the back of Tettegouche Park yesterday in
Lake County and heard/saw 5 Black-throated Blue Warblers. From my
several visits this year nearly every time one is singing at the
first junction from the back, about a 20' walk up the hill. Others
are throughout the park.

For anyone proceeding up the north shore today.
I called a friend at the park this morning after Jim Lind's summary last
night for the Duluth report. I was told the Northern Hawk-owl was in the
Visitors' Center Parking Lot, on the lake side. At 8:45 the person

Hi
I am going to northernmost Queensland and possibly New Guinea in
February. I have been north or Cairns once, and I want to go further
north. I have looked at some web-sites, but I would appreciate any
first-hand experience.
Thanks

I heard 10 BTBs saturday, May 17 on the western slope and top of Moose Mtn
in Cook County. This site and Tettegouche Park are clearly the places with
the largest numbers of this warbler. In both places one must hike to find
the birds; I had a six mile round-trip on saturday, starting at the Ob
I heard 11-12 different Black-throated Blue Warblers on or west of Moose
Mtn near Lutsen today. Good numbers for that area. They are still singing
also in Lake County.

It was still in Silver Bay this morning, just down the street from the
original site.

Today on the west slope and top of Moose Mountain, at Lutsen in Cook
County, I heard 8 Black-throated Blue Warblers, plus good numbers of other
birds. This is about the number expected at this site at this time. In
2003 I first heard them a week earlier; last year a week later.

This morning a flock of 8 American White Pelicans landed in Lake

June 5, I heard them for the first time this season, in Tettegouche

the top from Lax Lake Road entrance to the park; you and those renting

Today at Oberg Mountain (which is not) in Cook County, I heard and saw
at least one Black-throated Blue Warbler, essentially at and 70-100m
clockwise from the junction of the access trail with the circumference
trail on the top. The singing covered a large area, thus the

These warblers are quite frequently heard (and seen) in the appropriate
habitat: well described in Kim Eckert's book. Over the weekend, had 2
singing in Tettegouche Park (Friday, May 22), from the back off Lax Lake
Road, Lake County. Also, 3 on Oberg Mountain, Cook County (Saturday,
May 23).
