The Gray Catbird that showed up in our yard in Shoreview on December 13th has
been back today in the same spot near one of our birdbaths.
If it is going to overwinter, our yard should be a good place for it.

their unmistakable shape and bill. From below they appeared uniformly
dark, except around their heads, where we could see varying flashes of white as
they soared and turned.

. To find the spot, walk south from the parking lot on
County Road F until reaching the second trash can (perhaps a quarter of a mile).
The road is closed to vehicular traffic. Parking lot is covered with ice, but
the road is clear.

their vocalizations
seemed a little off. Later, we saw Red-winged
blackbirds that seemed to be more normal (we saw the
yellow on the wing patches and they sounded right).
Surely we were mistaken about the first group.

numerous Downy WPs, several Red-bellied WPs, and at
least one Hairy. But, bigger (to me) even than seeing
the Pileated was ...
My first ever (yard or otherwise) Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker.
