This evening I found a SNOWY OWL on C.R. 1 north of Aitkin. The owl was
about 5 & 1/2 miles north of the Mississippi River bridge (this is
about a mile north of the diversion channel).Warren Nelson

fourth was about 4 & 3/4 miles north of Palisade on C.R.5.

The Yellow Rails have shown up at the McGregor Marsh and the Rice Lake
National Wildlife Refuge in very good numbers. These as well as
American Bitterns, Soras and Leconte's Sparrows were seen and hear on

There is a creek on the north side of the road and the bird is hanging
right near there, sometimes in the short trees and sometimes on the

RAILS, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, SNIPE and a
flock of BOBOLINKS. At the Moose Willow WMA just south of Hill City, I
played a tape of a Sora and had between 15 and 20 of call back.

After work, I went up Aitkin County Road 1. In a span of 45 minutes, I
covered about 10 miles as far north as township 379 and found 51 GREAT
GRAY OWLS with 29 of them in the field just to the north of the

As of this posting, there has not been a confirmed sighting of the
Glossy Ibis since early yesterday afternoon. The bird apparently flew
between 1:00 and 2:00 P.M. There are several cars of birders still out

I went north of Aitkin along C.R.1 and found a SHORT-EARED OWL about one
half mile north of the diversion channel. The bird was in the field on
the east side of the road. Also had several hundred TUNDRA SWANS, a

This evening after work while watching my feeders, an immature
DICKCISSEL showed up on the ground feeding with six cardinals. It was
there until dark -- very pretty bird. Warren Nelson
Bluejays start screaming
unendingly and when I went to the back porch, I found that a
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was putting the coup de grace on one of my beloved
Starlings ( I am pretty sure I can get over it in time). Warren Nelson
also add that today I had HARRIS' SPARROWS, WHITE-CROWNED
