Out with four great folks from Texas and Ohio on a COLD May day.
Black-backed Woodpecker male: McDavitt Rd 2.1-2.3 miles north of Sax Rd.
Boreal Chickadees (2): same place as woodpecker above.

Nothing like the Sax-Zim bog to bring people together! Standing on the
Arkola Road with black spruce bog on either side and no other folks
within miles were several birders visiting. They included Sparky and his
group of four Texans, another car with a person from Sweden accompanied
by someone
Spent yesterday(5/11/08) in Hibbing, so of course I had to make another two
trips through the sax zim bog coming to and from Duluth. In the morning the
scene was almost depressing. A thin covering of snow on the ground, cold
windy air, and grey skies. A rough legged hawk let me walk right

stone lake road where the stone lake rd. runs close to the lake, I observed
approx. 300 RING NECKED ducks. Other ducks seen in the bog included BLUE
WINGED TEAL, MALLARD, NORTHERN SHOVELER, BUFFLEHEAD, and HOODED ME
Took a ride on 4-13-08, there were numerous wood duck pairs, hooded Merganser
pairs, a couple golden eyes, mallards and Canadian geese in the ditches along
Hwy. 7 and Stone Lake Rd. A hawk owl was spotted by the sod farm and a long
eared owl was on Stone Lake Rd. The flock of Sharptails that fr

Spent the day in the bog yesterday, started out at -8 and raised slowly
to +35 before we left. Highlights were the Northern Hawk Owl in the
normal spot on 7, north of the sod farms, and 3 Black-backed
Woodpeckers, two on Admiral Road and one on McDavitt. We found Boreal
Chickadees at four locations
On Friday morning we refound the Northern Hawk Owl on the east side of CR 7
0.5 mile south of the Stone Lake Rd. We also found a Northern Shrike on the
north side of CR 133 just east of the Blue Spruce Rd.
We continue to have a large flock of Pine and Evening Grosbeaks coming to

While in northeast Minnesota this weekend, my girlfriend and I were able to
make several attempts at finding owls in the Sax-Zim Bog. However, we were
unable to find the McDavitt Rd. and Nicholsen Lake Rd. Great Grays, or the
Admiral/Cranberry Rd. Northern Hawk-Owl, despite dawn and dusk visits
I birded the Sax-Zim area today and found it somewhat slow away from the
feeders. The highlight was a Great Grey Owl found at 2 PM along McDavitt Rd,
3.2 miles north of CR 28. I struck out on the Nichols Lake Rd Great Greys, the
Hawk Owl, and the woodpeckers despite making several forays into

Introduced some Missouri friends to the bog yesterday. The day started slowly
but luckily we were able to locate both northern owl species and the
sightings picked up after 3pm.
