The YCNH is currently (4:45 pm) located in the cottonwood tree
overlooking Minnehaha Creek at the intersection of 28th Ave South and
47th Street East in South Minneapolis. The dozing critter is clearly
visible from the grass along the north side of 47th.

The heron didn't present itself until about 6:20pm, when it flew from its dense
cover (daytime roosting site) to a conspicuous spot on the large willow tree,
fairly high up. The observers (about 7, including me) could see the dark bill,
long legs, and the triangular speckles on its back. What a
I visited Lake Hiawatha yesterday around 5pm, just before the storms rolled in.
I went to the spot on the golf course by hole 12 but only saw a great blue
heron from that location. There were no golfers near by so I did not have any
problems with people. I went back to the park side and stood
I checked Jeff's blog and that is not the bird.
Green herons, great blue herons, and black-crowned night-herons are
all regularly seen in that same area.
The bird we saw is much different in markings and structure than that
photo or the green herons which are commonly seen here. It hangs
Yes, the area the bird is frequenting, now that Minnehaha Creek is
high water, is along the golf course shore where the creek enters
Lake Hiawatha.
The golf course is closed to non-golfers--although neighbors do
quietly stroll/circumnavigate the lake--staying on the gravel path--

Minnehaha Creek has continued to rise and now runs very fast with the
rains of the past 24 hours. This has eliminated the muddy shores,
sand bars, and calm waters.
So the bulk of the night heron flock has moved to the calmer water at
the south and southwest sides of Lake Hiawatha.

People have contacted me and asked for directions to the 2 locations where
the YCNH has been seen in Willmar, Kandiyohi county.
I would like to preface this by saying I have looked diligently for this
bird for parts of 7 days and about 5 hrs and HAVE NEVER FOUND IT when I was
looking. The
The yellow crowned night heron in Willmar, Kandiyohi county, was seen again
both Saturday and Sunday. (I did not have time to post earlier, sorry.)
Although I have been searching daily for the bird, without success, it was
again at the Berquist park- where it was originally seen - on Saturday.
Saw the Yellow Crowned Night Heron at Sutter Park in Austin From 12:02 to
12:30 Sunday afternoon. Thanks for the posts and good directions.
