I just had a male Red-breasted Nuthatch on my sunflower chip tube feeder. I see on the MOU occurrence maps that it's "occasional" in the summer in Anoka County, but it's the first I've seen here in almost 40 yrs after early May or before late August, (which I assume are late or early migrants).

I've been watching a red-breasted nuthatch getting little peanut morsels out of our feeder, then it flies on a low trajectory across the street and buries them in the leaf litter around my neighbors' foundations. That doesn't seem like a safe place to store a winter larder. Why would it do that?
