I disagree. Take a disaster, e.g. data center goes up in flames in the
middle of processing messages that represent money. What do you tell
management, "oh these message should have been transient". I happened to
work on the disaster recovery plan for MQ at JPM Chase for the mainframes.

The mainframe allows a "fuzzy" backup. I don't think the other platforms
provide a way to do a restore from a point in time and forward recover the
queues.

All the manuals/redbooks etc seem to state that the queue manager needs to
be stopped before it can be backed up. This doesn't seem ideal if you are
trying to run an application permanently.
Can anybody suggest ways of backing up a running Queue Manager.

You might take a look at your "ulimit" or user limits for open files.
I'm not that familiar with Solaris but I think it's a universal Unix
convention.
"ulimit -a" should show you how many open file handles you can have for the
current user.

this is a design issue. Because the "local" MQSeries knows that
the target queue is not local, it does not care for the queuename. it
is only interested how to route the message to the target queuemanager.
its up to the target queuemanager to look for a "local
definition" of the queue.
