mutt very slow with Exchange

I get the feeling that mutt and Exchange interacting over IMAP aren't happy companions, am I correct? I have no local mail, all my mail access is over IMAP. I can use mutt to access my departmental (dovecote) mail server over IMAP and it is quick - downloads 3000+ headers in a second or so.
