If the file is an mvpmc supported type ie .mpg or .ts there will not
be an attempt to do any transonding.

I've started vlc -I telnet by hand on a Debian based mythtv
server, and added --vlc to the dongle
config, and added a symlink on the server so that both it
and the mvpmc see all recordings under /var/my
