You are missing the libmysqlclient.
I guess the problem is your makefile. make != shell
You CFLAGS should have something like this:
-L/usr/lib/mysql -lmysqlclient
(Actualy it should be LDFLAGS and LOADLIBES)
something like $(shell pkg-config --cflags $(packages) ) should work
