OK I get what you mean except that I installed on debian potato and
therefore do not have the reinit step since I used apt-get. Do you have any
ideas on this one.

: access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: (NO)
when I try typing mysql at the root prompt. I have read the manual but as
yet
have not managed to set any grant tables can anyone point me in the right
direction
